If I could identify a “word for the year” it would be CONSISTENCY. Some people are turned off by the buzz of our culture’s “New Year’s Resolutions” and I certainly can understand that, seeing how quickly many resolutions turn into yesterday’s leftover memories! But at the same time, not having a fresh vision for setting goals leaves you without momentum for moving forward! Recently we celebrated achieving a new 2023 family goal by spending the night at a hotel with a pool. The kids love to swim and we splurged on Domino’s Pizza. We as a family had made a decision to commit to consistency in becoming more active and moving our bodies in 2023. Since the end of December, Christmas Day actually, we have been doing family workouts each evening, allowing ourselves off nights twice per week. And let me tell you about all the benefits we are experiencing! The boys run the two flights of stairs several times in a row and the little kids run along behind. We lift some weights, do floor exercises like sit-ups and push-ups, and I run on my elliptical. Jim’s stiff muscles and achy back benefit greatly from the stretches and I’m achieving some of my own health goals. The boys run off some of that endless energy, and the rest of the evening is more calm and peaceful in our home!
Now I do have to wonder how the workout schedule will hold up to our summer baseball schedule. This year we have 3 boys playing baseball, one with the high school, one with Little League, and now a third one with Townball (YMCA). I recently laid out of summer practice and game schedule. Oh my! (#sendhelp) I will just not get anything else done in May and June except run to baseball games. And I’d better start setting aside savings for all the concession-stand meals we’ll be eating. Its the fun of summer, though, and I’m ready!
