Beef Breakdown Explained

Buy our beef retail...

We have most of our beef cuts available for sale if you stop by the farm - you might even get a tour! Ordering a sample bundle is a great way to try grass fed beef if you're on the fence about it. Once you're a fan, then consider saving money and filling your freezer with a larger quantity. All our retail beef is processed locally at the Riverside Bud's Meats Locker and Iowa State Inspected.

Buy beef to fill the freezer...

When buying a large quantity of beef to fill your freezer, you would order a quarter, half or whole. The way we sell beef off the farm is by live weight. So here’s how it works. We charge a flat rate per quarter based on live weight. You will also pay the locker for processing and packaging according to their rates. Hazelwood Ave Butcher Shop is owned and operated by an Amish gentleman, who does not have a phone. (This is part of the fun of buying local and working with the Amish!)  He lives just a few miles from our farm so we will personally hand deliver your cut sheet.

Understanding a quarter, half or whole...

In case you have ever purchase a quarter, a side or a whole beef, chances are you have wondered why you received less meat than expected. The average weight of a live grass-fed steer or heifer ready for harvest is 1,200 pounds. So how much of this meat should you expect to receive in edible products? The following information will help explain how a live animal converts into packaged product and how much you can expect to take home and fill your freezer.
